Bang bang bang. “Dalton! Come on man, open up. I know you’re in there.”

Dalton cracked one eyelid and cast a bleary eye at the alarm clock. Seven a.m. He yanked the quilt over his head and mumbled “f*** off” to Boden Hicks, the idiot beating on his door.

“McKay. I’m not f***ing around. This is an emergency.”

That hauled Dalton’s ass out of bed. He unlatched the old-fashioned bolt and opened the door. “What’s the emergency?”

Boden hustled inside but a gust of snow followed before he slammed the heavy oak door shut. He stamped his feet. “Damn snowstorm came from out of nowhere.”

“You better not have tricked me out of bed to complain about the goddamned weather.”

Boden shuffled over to the woodstove to warm himself, but it’d been a good ten hours since Dalton had loaded it up. “It’s like a damn freezer in here.”

“That’s because I was sleeping. In my own bed, after roughing it on an elk hunt, remember?”

“Yeah, I remember. I’m just glad the hunting party made it out before this storm hit.” Boden unzipped his parka and pulled out Dalton’s cell phone, still attached to the wall charger. “Normally I could give a crap if you stay in bed a week after a hunt, but you left your phone charging at the lodge last night. The thing’s been buzzing like crazy. When I unplugged it, I noticed you’ve got twenty-seven missed calls. So it’s gotta be something important.”

Dalton’s stomach knotted. Since he had little to no cell service in the mountains, he forgot he even had a cell phone most of the time. Few people had his number—just his brothers, his mother, his cousin Sierra McKay, his accountant, his banker and his investment guys.

“Gimme that.” Dalton scrolled through the missed calls. Twelve from Brandt, twelve from Tell, three from Sierra.

Had to be bad news if his family had reached out to him.

The family he hadn’t seen in three years.

“What’s going on?”

He glanced up at Boden. “No clue. I haven’t bothered to set up my voice mail on this phone so I’ll have to call to find out.”

Boden sighed. “Speaking of…I wanted to make sure your two-way is charged. Since you have an issue with technology that allows people to get in touch with you.”

“It’s charged. I laid in a store of food before the huntin’ trip so I can ride out the storm.”

“Good. We’re supposed to get a foot of snow today and maybe more tonight.” Boden crouched in front of the woodstove and chucked kindling in the cold embers before setting the torch to the pile. “Might be a couple days before you can get out, if you need to go home.”

Home. It didn’t have the same connotation it once did. When it was all he’d known. “I’ll let you know what’s goin’ on as soon as I know.”

Boden piled several small logs in the black box before he stood. “You worried?”

Dalton shrugged.

But Boden didn’t buy his act; he never had, which was why they’d become such good friends. “You want me to stick around?”

“Nah. I’ll put on a pot of coffee before I call my brother.” He smirked. “Get on back to the lodge. Bree would jam my nuts in a vise if you got snowed in with me instead of with her.”

“Your nuts ain’t ever gonna be anywhere near my wife’s hands, McKay.”

He laughed. “I know your kink doesn’t extend to sharing.”

“Damn straight.” Boden zipped up his parka and slipped on his gloves. “You need anything, buzz us. If we don’t answer right away—”

“I’ll assume you’re tied up. Or rather, you’re tying Bree up.”

As soon as Boden left, Dalton started coffee. Then he stripped off his long johns and took a cold shower. That ensured he’d be fully awake.

The main room of the three-room cabin had warmed up by the time he’d dressed. After downing two cups of coffee, Dalton stood by the window in the kitchen and called Brandt.

His oldest brother answered on the fourth ring. “’Bout damn time, Dalton. Where the hell have you been that you can’t return a phone call?”

No doubt Brandt thought he was f***ing off someplace. Little did he know how tiring it was leading a ten-day hunting party into the mountains. But Dalton no longer explained his life choices to anyone. “What’s goin’ on? I had twenty-four missed calls in the last twelve hours.” No one knew Sierra had his number. His brothers would be pissed if they knew Dalton kept in better contact with Sierra than with them.

“Dad had a stroke.”

Silence. Finally Dalton asked, “Is he okay?”

“He’s alive, if that’s what you mean. He’s havin’ difficulties talkin’. They’re not sure if it’s permanent. They’re not too sure of anything at this point. So we—me’n Tell—are asking you to come home.”

Dalton closed his eyes. He didn’t want to play nursemaid to the man who’d made his life hell. Especially not after the last conversation they’d had, which was the biggest reason Dalton had left Sundance for good—not that he’d told his brothers or anyone else about what’d gone down. “I don’t know if I can.”

“Can’t? Or won’t?” Brandt demanded.

“Why do you want me there?”

“Hey, bro. Brandt put you on speaker phone,” Tell said. “Look, we need you to help us make some decisions about Dad’s care.”

Dalton let his forehead rest against the frosted windowpane.

“We haven’t seen you in over three years. It sucks that something like this had to happen for you to even consider comin’ home. But we do need you here.”

He pictured his brothers, Tell leaning against the window in the cab of Brandt’s truck, his restless fingers tapping on his leg. Brandt seated behind the steering wheel, his posture stiff, arms crossed over his chest.

“When did this happen?” Dalton asked.

“Brandt got a call from the hospital in Spearfish yesterday morning. They wouldn’t let us see him until late afternoon. Soon as we had some information, we tried calling you.” Tell paused. “You ain’t gotten any better at returning calls.”

“But I did return it. Not fast enough for you?” he asked sharply. Jesus. Within two minutes of talking to his brothers he’d reverted to the defensive guy he’d left behind. He exhaled slowly. “Sorry. Cell service here is spotty.”

“Where are you?”

Don’t feel guilty they don’t know. “Alder, Montana. We’re in the midst of a blizzard so it might be a couple days before I can make it out of the mountains.”

Silence.

“Has the doctor given you a time frame on how long he’ll be in the hospital?”

“No,” Brandt said. “But when Dad is discharged, it’ll be to the rehab wing in a nursing home.”

That oughta make Casper even more the patient from hell. “Sounds like it won’t matter then if I’m not there for a couple of days. I’ll let you know when I’m on my way.”

“Sure. Will you be staying with one of us?” Tell asked.

“Nah. I’ve got it covered. Thanks though.”

Neither of his brothers asked where he’d be bunking down, although he sensed they wanted to.

“Okay, then. I guess we’ll see you when we see you.”

“Yep. Later.” Dalton hung up.

He stared out the window for the longest time, even though he couldn’t see sh** through the swirling snow.

But this storm wasn’t anything compared to the one he faced in Sundance.

The blizzard lasted two days. On the morning of the third day Dalton packed up his stuff, closed up his cabin and headed down the mountain.

Once he had a clear cell signal, he gave Brandt a heads up he was on his way. Brandt said they’d moved Casper to the rehab wing and to meet them there.

Then he placed a call to Sierra.

She answered with, “I swear every time I call you and I don’t hear back I live in mortal fear that you’ve disconnected from the world completely and you’re out in the forest running naked with woodchucks and sh**.”

“Not hardly. I returned the calls in order of importance.”

“So you’ve talked to your brothers?”

“Yeah. I’m on my way to Wyoming right now.”

“They giving you grief about…well, everything?”

“They both knew it wouldn’t take much for me to refuse to come back.” He flipped on the defroster. “How’d you find out about Casper’s stroke?”

“Keely. I knew your brothers would get a hold of you first, so my call isn’t about your father.”

“Then why did you call?” Dalton heard her take a deep breath and he went on full alert.

In a rush, Sierra said, “You’ve got to promise me that you won’t get mad at me for what I’m about to tell you.”

“No conversation ever ends well that starts that way.”

“True, but I want you to remember I was only following your parameters. And I kinda hoped someone else would tell you about this, so I didn’t have to. But then, you’d have to actually talk to someone who lives there, and we both know that’s a rarity, so I guess it falls to me.”

“You been drinkin’? ’Cause you ain’t making a lick of sense. Quit dancing around the subject, college girl, and spill it.”

“Rory is back in Sundance and working for Wyoming Natural Resource Council.”

Everything switched into slow motion. Dalton couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. He had to pull onto the shoulder so he didn’t wreck his truck.

“Dalton?”

“You said Rory is livin’ in Sundance.”

“Yes.”

“With her fiancé?”

“No. She, ah, broke off the engagement.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

This was not happening. Sierra had not kept this information from him about Rory for half a goddamned year.

“Dalton. I know your head is about to explode—”

“Jesus, Sierra, do you f***ing think? Why are you just telling me this now?” he roared. “Do you have any f***ing idea—”

“That you’ve been holed up in the middle of freakin’ nowhere moping because Rory got engaged to someone else? Why yes, I was completely aware of that little factoid, cuz.”

Silence.

“Besides, you were doing your lumberjack gig and completely off the grid when Rory ended the engagement. I’ll remind you of your zero tolerance policy—me not talking about Rory or sharing information about Rory’s life was your edict, Dalton. I was just following your parameters. And now the parameters have changed.”

“Seriously not f***ing amused. Will you just get to the point?”

“I really have to point out that you and Rory will actually be in the same place for the first time in over three years?”

“Three years? Try ten years since she’s lived there. I’da been in Sundance six months ago if I’d known she was there without some other asshole’s ring on her finger,” he snarled.

“Whoa. Take a step back, wolverine. I’m telling you now because maybe you’re smart enough to handle it the right way this time.”

“This time?” Dalton repeated sharply. “Don’t make this out to be my fault. I offered her—”

“Don’t snap at me or interrupt me again or I will hang up, understand?”

“Yeah, yeah, keep talkin’.”

“Rory is my sister. You’re my business partner and one of the few people I trust. I hate that I’m pulled between you two. It’s time you manned up, Dalton. And don’t remind me that you did that once three years ago after you walked out on your own wedding. Even you can admit it was piss poor timing on your part.”

“But that bad timing didn’t stop her from giving me an edict, did it?”

“Like I’ve told you ten thousand times, that wasn’t an edict. Two years was a time line for Rory to finish grad school and a frame of reference for you to understand how important that was to her. You shouldn’t have taken it as gospel.”

“Then she shouldn’t have given me false hope.”

“Then you shouldn’t have turned tail and run again,” Sierra retorted. “Especially after you gave her false hope that things might finally change between you two.”

Like he needed that reminder. “Does she know about Casper?”

“Doubtful. She’s been out of town and she stays out of McKay gossip completely.”

Then Rory wouldn’t suspect Dalton was on his way back to Sundance. The element of surprise might work in his favor. “What’s the best way to approach her?”

“She bartends at the Twin Pines on the side. She’s working tonight. Anything else I can do for you besides making your day with this news?” Sierra asked sweetly.

Making his day? Hell, she’d made his life, because now he had a shot at getting the life he wanted. “Where are the keys for the house in town?”

A pause. Then, “Why?”

“I need a place to stay.”

Sierra heaved a put-upon sigh. “They’re under the back deck on a key hook. But there are two conditions before I’ll let you stay there. First, you don’t tell anyone I own it. No one.”

“Deal. And FYI, that’s why we have a silent partnership.” He’d supplied Sierra with some capital to start her own business last year and he also wanted it kept on the down low. “What’s the second condition?”

“I need a handyman to do some things. Okay, a lot of things. You’re handy, you’re there and voila—you’re selected. I’ll FedEx my repair list today but anything else you see that needs fixed just go ahead.”

“I’ll do it but I want to be reimbursed once a week for whatever I buy. You don’t get to pull that sixty day wait for payment bull crap like you money people usually do.”

She laughed. “That’s how we become money people. We hold on to money as long as possible. Be warned, some of what needs done will be major costs.”

“I ain’t a carpet installer,” he warned. “Nor will I put in windows.”

Sierra sighed again. “You are a handy handyman, right?”

“Guess you’ll have to trust me, huh?”

“I’ll be keeping tabs on you.” Another pause. “I’m sorry about your dad. If you need to talk about anything—except for Rory—call me.”

By the time Dalton crossed into Crook County hours later, he had a plan in place.

Patience. Perseverance. He would not blow this chance.

Rory Wetzler was his. His. She always had been, she always would be.

And he’d do whatever it took to prove it.

bkredneckromeoThe last McKay standing is knocked to his knees…

Three years ago, Dalton McKay looked across the altar and saw the woman he knew he’d love for the rest of his life…only it wasn’t his bride. That’s when he took the McKays’ love-’em-and-leave-’em reputation to new heights—fleeing the ceremony and Wyoming.

Now a family issue has brought Dalton back to Sundance, giving him a chance to prove to everyone—especially the woman he thought he lost—that he’s a changed man.

Aurora “Rory” Wetzler has fallen for cowboy hottie Dalton’s smooth-talkin’ ways too many times. So he’s determined to convince her he’s playing for keeps this go around? Fine. She’ll call that bluff—she can’t ignore their intense chemistry or resist smokin’ hot sex, but she’s not willing to gamble her heart again.

Dalton has plenty of fences to mend with the McKays, but his biggest fear is that Rory doesn’t believe they have a future. He’ll have to pull out all the stops to show her they belong together for the long haul.

Warning: Contains a sexy cowboy who tames his sassy lady love with his romantic and his kinky side. In explicit detail.

Michelle Miles’ ONLY FOR A KNIGHT with giveaway

only for a knight cover
After saving her love, Princess Elyne returns to the Otherworld by order of her mother. But it’s not the homecoming she expects. Furious Elyne has meddled with humans, the queen imprisons her and strips away her magic. The only way Elyne can get it back is to perform one selfless act.
When Queen Maeve sends Derron to find the Guardian of the Sword of Light, he can’t leave without releasing Elyne. After all, she altered time to save his life. But freeing the princess comes with a steep price—he must take her with him on this dangerous quest. And the two must deal with feelings of past hurt and the love growing between them.
Their search becomes more than a pursuit for the missing Guardian as Lord Kieran rises to dominate the Unseelie court. He will stop at nothing to gain control of both the Otherworld and the human realm. Even with the help of Elves, dragons and their human friends, the odds are stacked against Derron and Elyne.
“I’m sure it was because I’m so charming.”
This made him laugh out loud, showing off his deep dimples on either side of his kissable mouth. It sent her stomach plummeting to her shoes to see the joy in his face. Something he hadn’t had in far too long. As least since his last joust in the human realm when he nearly died…twice.
Derron slid an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close as they walked. She stumbled, falling into him a lot closer than he probably intended. She could feel the warmth of him pressing through to her skin, delighting every sense she had. Her pulse quickened as he leaned toward her and kissed her on the cheek. Disappointment quickly followed when that was all she got. A sisterly peck.
“You are truly delightful, your highness,” Derron said.
“I wish you wouldn’t call me that.” Irritation clawed through her. Mostly because he didn’t take her in his arms and kiss her thoroughly. As though she were the last Fae woman worth kissing.
“Why not? Isn’t that your rightful title?”
“It is, but it’s unnecessary for you to continue to use ‘your highness’.”
“You don’t seem to mind when the others call you that.” Before she could answer, he asked, “Would you prefer ‘princess’, then?”
“No.” She pouted, clenching her jaw tight and trying not to pucker her lips. Still, she was incensed. And he still held her so close she could literally feel his pulsing heart. Or maybe that was her imagination.
“‘Your worship’?”
Now he was teasing her. She flushed to the tips of her pointed ears, her face burning hot.
“Not that either, I gather. How about ‘your grace’? I suppose I could bend the rules of address this once and call you that. Would that do?”
“No.” She punched him in the ribs to get away but he still held fast. “Let me go.”
He stopped walking so suddenly she stumbled again. This time he turned to her, grasped her arms and pulled her close. So close, her hands rested on his chest and she knew for certain she could feel his heart pounding through his tunic. Their eyes locked, his searching hers. Heat flooded her. Something she’d not known…well, ever. And especially for Derron.
It had been much too long since he’d looked at her like that. Ages, in fact. When he had tried to court her and all she wanted to do was run away from him. She’d wanted nothing to do with him. She had been such a fool to reject him. And why had she? She thought she hadn’t been in love with him. How wrong she was.
“Elyne, then. How about I call you Elyne?”
She liked the way her name sounded on his tongue. Oh, he’d said it before. But usually with princess attached to it. Rarely her name. And never looking at her like that.
Her gaze focused on his lips, perfect for kissing. The deep-set dimples on either side. The scruffy blond whiskers shadowing his jaw and cheeks. Neither of them wore their glamour here in the Otherworld to hide their true Fae features. His ears were tipped like hers, his blond hair fell over his forehead in thick waves and she longed to run her fingers through the silken strands.
“You may call me Elyne.”
His gaze landed on her lips, paused, and then lifted back to hers. He wanted to kiss her but he was afraid. Mayhap as afraid as she was for him to kiss her. That would mean they had deep feelings for each other and since they’d made such a mess of things with the broken betrothal, she wasn’t sure where that would leave them.
“Then ’tis what I’ll call ye.”
She blinked in surprise as he released her and resumed walking. For that brief moment, his Irish lilt came out so clear it took her aback. In fact, she couldn’t recall ever hearing it. He masked it so well.
“You coming, Elyne?” he called over his shoulder.
Elyne picked up her skirts and fell in step beside him. “Shouldn’t I be armed as well?” She steered the conversation as far from the two of them as possible. She didn’t want to acknowledge the need and desire Derron had managed to stir inside her. All she wanted to do was ignore it.
“You? Armed? Why?”
“All of you are armed,” she said. “You have a sword and a dagger. And I have no magic.”
“Fear not, dear prin—Elyne. I promise to keep thee safe.”
She snarled at him. Mocking me again. “Are you denying me a weapon?”
“Can you shoot a bow?” he asked, giving her a sideways glance. Even though he tried to keep his face passive, she could see the underlying smirk.
“Nay.”
“Wield a sword?”
“Nay.”
Derron chuckled. “Then, pray tell, what sort of weapon do you wish for?”
She’d never laid her hands on a weapon before but it seemed silly to be traipsing through the Woodlands Forest with nothing but her wits. She would feel much better if she had something within reach. Mayhap some sort of blade she could keep on her person. Something that could replace the fact she had no magic. She may as well be running around naked.
She looked over Derron, noticed the sheath tied to his thigh and knew that’s what she wanted.
“A dagger.” Aye, that would make her feel better to have one. “I know how to use that.”
“A dagger?” He splayed his fingers. “You have any ideas on where to get one? I don’t see Thuluke’s Weapons Shoppe here.”
Her gaze landed once again on his dagger. He put a possessive hand on it. “You want mine. Of course you do.”
“You could spare the dagger.”
“I could, couldn’t I?” Smiling, Derron unsheathed his dagger and handed it to her. “I expect you to take good care of that. It was a gift from my father.”
“It will be safe with me.” She ran her finger along the pearl hilt, admiring the iridescent colors dancing along it.
“Have any idea how to use it?”
Elyne blinked. “Not exactly.”
Grinning, he stepped behind her, wrapped his long fingers around her thin wrist. “Allow me to demonstrate.”
Derron’s body pressed against her back, molding to her easily. With her wrist in his hand, the delicious warm skin pressing hers, it was difficult for her to concentrate on his words.
“Thrust like this.” He pulled her arm back and then pushed it forward. “Aim for the heart. If you miss that, then the neck.” Heated breath cascaded over her nape. His woodsy scent filled her nose.
“Why?” she asked.
“Best way to kill a man, princess. How does it feel?”
Splendid. Though she was certain he meant the dagger in her hand. “It feels like a dagger.”
He chuckled and released her. “You’ll need this too.” He untied the sheath from his thigh. “But a lady, nay a princess, shouldn’t keep that in plain sight.”
“Why not?”
“She is more lethal with a hidden weapon.”
A mischievous light twinkled in his eyes, making her heart do a quick ka-thunk in her chest. Derron knelt at her feet, his gaze still on hers. When his hand went up her skirt and rested on her calf, she nearly came undone. Slowly, he slid his hand along her leg, pushing up her skirt to reveal an expanse of creamy white skin. Her heart throbbed, pounding wildly in her chest and ears. Her breath caught in her throat.
Elyne watched as he tied the sheath to her thigh in the same manner. She’d swear she could still feel the warmth of his skin on it as he secured it in place.
“There. The dagger?” He held his hand up for it.
She placed the pearl hilt in his palm and he deftly slid it into the sheath. All the while keeping his hands in constant contact with her leg.
“That should do it.” Derron rose to his full height.
He had two inches on her, his hair brushing his forehead as he gave her a wicked smile. He knew what he was doing and he liked doing it. She liked him doing it. Why did he touch her so intimately when they’d been at odds for so long? He’d gone to the court to have their betrothal broken and now this?
“Feel better, princess?”
“I—”
But that was as far as she got when an arrow went zooming between them and buried in the ancient oak beside her head.

Official Bio: CHERYL HOLT is a New York Times, USA Today, and Amazon bestselling author of over thirty novels. She’s also a lawyer and mom, and at age forty, with two babies at home, she started a new career as a commercial fiction writer.  She’d hoped to be a suspense novelist, but couldn’t sell any of her manuscripts, so she ended up taking a detour into romance where she was stunned to discover that she has a knack for writing some of the world’s greatest love stories. Her books have been released to wide acclaim, and she has won or been nominated for many national awards.  She is particularly proud to have been named “Best Storyteller of the Year” by the trade magazine Romantic Times BOOK Reviews. She lives and writes in Hollywood, California, and she loves to hear from fans.  Visit her website at http://www.cherylholt.com.

shell Seawitch: So Cheryl Holt is here to share the details about her newest self-published books that are coming out back to back in May, June and July so that you don’t have to wait months for the next story in the series. So I am happy to turn the blog over to Cheryl Holt:

shell

Cheryl: I’ve finally written my first trilogy.  Ta-da!        Books by Cheryl I’ve never done an actual trilogy before.  I’ve now published thirty-five novels, so over the years, I’ve had plenty of cross-over characters and a few linking premises, but I never previously set out to write a trilogy where one book flows to the next. The finished product is my “Lord Trent” trilogy, and the great news is that the three books are being released back to back so readers don’t have to wait months or years to read the next installment. The first book, LOVE’S PROMISE is already out.  Book #2, LOVE’S PRICE, is coming on June 1st, and the final book, LOVE’S PERIL, will be here on July 1st.  The hero in LOVE’S PERIL is a pirate.  Yum!  I always love macho pirates. The main linking characters in the trilogy are Charles Sinclair, the Earl of Trent, and his natural-born son, Phillip.  For decades, Charles has been England’s most notorious roué.  He’s handsome, charming, and magnetic, and he loves women—and they love him back.  So he constantly has brief, illicit affairs.  Yet even after he’s left his paramours, even after it’s clear he considered it a quick fling and he’s never coming back, they still pine away, praying he’ll return.  But he never does. He doesn’t have much of a conscience, so he’s never been sorry for any of the havoc he’s caused in women’s lives.  And since he’s seduced maidens from London to Rome, he has many, many illegitimate children. Phillip is his oldest bastard son, and he has a cordial and intriguing relationship with Charles.  Charles doesn’t ever let anyone get too close, but he likes Phillip and has let him establish a fond connection. Phillip is everything that Charles is not:  loyal, devoted, kind, generous.  He worries about Charles’s bastard children—especially his natural-born daughters.  Phillip has made it his life’s work to find his lost half-siblings, to create a family with them, and to fix any damage inflicted on their lives by their father’s licentious conduct. The “Lord Trent” trilogy tells the stories of four of Charles’s adult children.  Book #1, LOVE’S PROMISE, is about Fanny (Sinclair) Carrington on her rocky road to love with a Duke’s son, Michael Wainwright, Viscount Henley. Book #2, LOVE’S PRICE features twins, Helen and Harriet (Sinclair) Stewart.  They cross paths with sexy, yummy brothers, James and Tristan Harcourt.  James is Earl of Westwood, and Tristan is a ship’s captain.  Harriet is one of my favorite characters I’ve ever created, and in the novel, she lands herself in a wild, unbelievable predicament that will have readers whipping through the pages to learn her fate. The final book, LOVE’S PERIL, tells the story of Charles’s bastard son, John Sinclair.  John grew up in France, and he has an alias:  He’s the world’s most notorious pirate—Jean Pierre, The French Terror—and the entire British Navy is searching for him.  When he sets his sights on the Bramblebay Estate on the English coast, Miss Sarah Teasdale’s life will never be the same. The trilogy has gotten great reviews, with Novels Alive TV saying the books are “…filled with extraordinary passion—both physical and emotional—that make it difficult to set them aside for any length of time. A true guilty pleasure!” And Ivy Truitt at Manic Readers said, “LOVE’S PROMISE can’t take the number one spot as my favorite by Ms. Holt—that belongs to her book NICHOLAS—but it’s currently running a close second.” The novels will be available both as e-books and print books, so they’re the perfect choice to take on your summer vacation or weekend getaway.  The print books will not appear in stores but can be ordered on-line at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.  And the e-books will be available at all the major on-line bookstores and available for download to any e-device. At the beginning of Book #1, LOVE’S PROMISE, the hero, Michael, mentions that he and the heroine, Fanny, have been exchanging angry letters, but the letters aren’t included in the novel, so readers are left to wonder what the letters say.  When I was trying to figure out what sort of promo I should do to advertise the book’s release, I decided it would be fun to write the letters and send them out as if they were penned by the hero and heroine. So before you start to read LOVE’S PROMISE, be sure to read the ten letters between Michael and Fanny.  They’re posted on my web page (on the LOVE’S PROMISE book page), and they set the tone for the beginning of the novel.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog post today.  I’m very, very grateful to have had this chance to connect with you.  I hope you love, love, love my Lord Trent trilogy.  I think it’s the best work I’ve ever done.  I hope all of you agree.

LOVE’S PROMISE  May 2013   Love's Promise        New York Times bestselling author, CHERYL HOLT, will sweep readers away with the first novel in her new and breathtaking ‘Lord Trent’ trilogy… With the death of his older brother, Michael Wainwright, Viscount Henley, has become heir to his father, Duke of Clarendon.  The Wainwright men are renowned cads, and as his brother’s will is read, it’s discovered that he sired an illegitimate son and has left the eight-year-old boy his entire fortune.  Michael decides to bring the boy to London so he can be showered with all the wealth and status guaranteed by his inheritance.  But first, he has to gain custody from the boy’s aunt, who is determined to keep her nephew away from Michael’s dissolute family. Frances “Fanny” Carrington has always lived in a small village in the country.  As a newborn, she was left in a basket on the church steps and raised by the vicar and his wife.  But they’ve died, and Fanny is in dire straits, struggling to raise her nephew, to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads.  When she begins to receive correspondence from Michael, asking for custody, she can’t help but be suspicious.  For years, the Wainwrights have refused to claim her nephew or provide financial assistance to him.  She’s alarmed by their sudden interest.  What can it mean? As Michael finally meets Fanny, their attraction is swift, blatant, and dangerous.  He can’t fight the need to have her at any cost, and gradually, he lures her into his decadent life of affluence and privilege.  But she’s never possessed the callous nature required to thrive in the cut-throat world of the aristocracy, so she could never understand the peril she faces from those who would do anything to keep them apart… “…a master writer…” Fallen Angel reviews “Best storyteller of the year…” Romantic Times Magazine

LOVE’S PRICE   June 2013  Love's Price CHERYL HOLT dazzles readers once again with another tale of soaring romance and  breathtaking drama as she delivers the second novel in her  critically-acclaimed ‘Lord Trent’ trilogy. Helen Stewart never  understood why—as a tiny girl—she and her twin sister Harriet were sent  away to boarding school and never allowed home for holidays.  At age  sixteen, they were shocked to discover that they are the illegitimate  daughters of the notorious rogue, Charles Sinclair.  Cast out by their  relatives, they moved to London, and Helen has made a life for herself  as a lady’s companion.  In her line of employment, she must maintain a  stellar reputation, but she’s exhausted by the fussy whims of the  debutantes she’s forced to chaperone.  She’d give anything to change her  fate. James Harcourt, Earl  of Westwood, is in a bind.  After his father died, he learned that his  estates were bankrupt.  He gambles to replenish his coffers so he’s  living a dissolute bachelor’s life.  When his female ward arrives  unexpectedly for an extended visit, he must protect her from scandal by  hiring a lady’s companion.  When pretty, alluring Helen interviews for  the position, he’s instantly smitten.  She possesses the qualifications  to fill a much more intimate role. He  shocks her by suggesting she become his mistress, and when his offer is  rebuffed, he begins a cunning seduction, aimed at wearing her down.  Helen can’t resist the temptation he offers, but she doesn’t have the  sophistication to survive in his world. And as James immerses them in a  dangerous spiral of pleasure and excitement, he proves that he is  determined to have her at any cost…

LOVE’S PERIL      July, 2013   Love's Peril CHERYL HOLT delivers  another gripping tale of love, betrayal, loyalty and family, proving  once again why she’s hailed as a women’s fiction powerhouse.  In this  explosive conclusion to her ‘Lord Trent’ trilogy, readers will be  sighing with pleasure and cheering with delight. John Sinclair leads  a double life.  Though he’s the illegitimate son of the infamous cad,  Charles Sinclair, he seems to be a rich and prosperous gentleman.  In  reality, he is the notorious pirate known as Jean Pierre, The French  Terror.  He preys on British ships, carrying out a secret vendetta  guaranteed to financially ruin several wealthy families. He’s driven  and determined and takes what he wants with a reckless abandon. Sarah Teasdale  lives quietly in the country at her family’s estate on the English  coast.  With her father’s death, she’s at the mercy of her cruel  relatives, and she’d give anything to change her fate.  When dashing,  mysterious John Sinclair arrives for a visit, she’s stunned to learn  that her stepbrother has gambled away her home to John.  Everything is  lost—including Sarah—with John claiming she now belongs to him and he  can use her however he wishes.  And he has many ideas as to the exact  sort of role he’d like her to fill. Normally,  John wouldn’t have bothered with a sheltered innocent like Sarah.  But  he simply can’t resist.  As a man who enjoys only the finest things in  life, Sarah might turn out to be just what he’s always needed.

shell  And as an added bonus our Miss Ivy has a review of Love’s Promise.

Michael Wainwright, Viscount Henley will also eventually become the Duke of Clarendon.  With the death of his brother, John, Michael had the yoke of obligation firmly round his neck like a noose.  At the reading of John’s will Michael discovers John had a son, Thomas.  Thomas was left a fortune and Michael named his trustee.  When Michael tries to gain custody of Thomas via letters he’s dismissed by Frances Carrington, Thomas’ aunt.  Tired of arguing (really who does the woman think she is?) and ready to claim Thomas Michael travels to the village where they live.  When Michael finally meets Frances all his carefully laid plans go to hell in a hand basket.

Michael Wainwright, Viscount Henley, is our hero and typical aristocrat, entitled and self-centered with a cavalier attitude regarding others.  With the death of his elder brother John, Michael’s had to resign his military commission and return home.  Michael resents the obligation and responsibility being the only son has placed on him.  Upon the reading of John’s will the family discovers he’s fathered a son, Thomas, and bequeathed everything he could to him, naming Michael as his trustee.

Ms.Holt specializes in heroes who aren’t necessarily nice or likeable people, at least not to begin with and Michael is no exception.  His disregard for the reality of Fanny’s position and rationalization of his actions, despite his suspicions about her parentage, are typical.  Michael is thoughtless which oddly enough is his saving grace.  He truly doesn’t thoroughly consider the consequences.  It’s all about the moment and whatever goal he’s set his sights on.  Michael kinda grows on you.

FrancesCarrington is Thomas’ aunt.  She has raised Thomas and provided, however meagerly, for their survival.  The scandal of Camilla’s pregnancy caused their father, the Vicar, to lose his position and the family to be shunned.  The shame was blamed for his and his wife’s death.  Frances doesn’t trust the sudden interest in Thomas by the Wainwright family when her letters requesting assistance in the past were ignored.

Fanny has dignity, class, and an honest loving heart.  Though their circumstances may be dire she doesn’t give up hope.   She loves Thomas dearly and vows to keep him from the Wainwright’s believing they don’t have his best interests at heart.

Our first introduction to Michael is at the end of an illicit tryst during a ball with a woman whose name he can’t recall.  This sums up Michael in the beginning.  His resentment shows in practically every move he makes.  He feels trapped and can’t see any way out of his current situation.

When Michael sets out to claim Thomas he meets Fanny on the outskirts of the village.

Fanny affects him in the strangest and most disconcerting way.  The only thing to ever truly discombobulate Michael is Fanny.  She starts him thinking.

A lot of the appeal in Ms.Holt’s books is the rocky road to redemption and hopefully love requited.  LOVE’S PROMISE has a particularly perilous path to a potential happily ever after.  There are numerous wrongs to be answered for and a lot of growing to be done.  A lot of living and action is packed into LOVE’S PROMISE; it’s busy and occasionally dramatic.   I was hooked from the start.

Another favorite is the karma and comeuppance factor.  Ms.Holt never stints on the karmic payback for her nasty characters and LOVE’S PROMISE contains some especially gratifying just rewards.

LOVE’S PROMISE can’t take the number one spot as my favorite by Ms.Holt, that belongs to Nicholas, but it’s currently running a close second.
