This is the first book in The Runaway Bride series by Celeste Bradley. It is a historical romance set in Regency England. The story follows Aidan and Madeleine who were once lovers. A girl child is left on the steps of Brown’s Club of Distinguished Gentlemen to which Aidan and his two friends (who are leads in the remaining books of the series) are members. A note is pinned to her coat claiming that her father belongs to the club and the mother has stopped sending money to the nanny. As Aidan, Colin, and Jack are the only non-fossilized members of the club it must be one of them.
Jack the third friend is believed to be her father since he is conveniently away. But Aidan looks at the girl and sees his old flame in her looks and temperament. So he sets out to find the woman who broke his heart all the while hiding the child Melody in his rooms with the help of Colin. After all, women (including the small versions) are not allowed in men’s clubs. Madeleine has secrets, but they do not include Melody as her child. Those secrets caused Madeleine to push Aidan away four years before and now threaten to tear the budding family apart. There is a villain who would steal Madeleine away from Aidan.
I loved this book and had a hard time putting it down. It has love, suspense, a little action, and a girl that tugs at the heartstrings. It caused a full gamut of feelings from happiness to sadness to fear. There is a cast of characters that make this more than just a love story. They make you want to be in Brown’s as part of the excitement. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves historical and honorable men.
