Hidden Currents by Christine Feehan

Hidden Currents is the last book in the Drake Sisters series. The series follows seven sisters with magical powers that have been passed down for generations. Each sister possesses a unique ability except for the youngest sister, Elle. Since she is destined to have the next generation of daughters she possesses all the gifts. They live in a small coastal town, Sea Haven, in northern California. The villagers all know about the sisters. And have been helped by them numerous times. This book is about Elle.

Elle is the mysterious sister out of the bunch. You don’t learn too much about her in the previous books. She disappears for blocks of time and no one is sure what she does. It’s only at the end of book six, Turbulent Sea, that you learn that she is an undercover agent. This book begins with her on a mission trying to determine if a Greek shipping magnate, Stavros Gratsos, is involved in human trafficking and other illegal activities. She’s just decided to tell her boss that he’s clean when he invites her to his island. She then overhears a conversation with his bodyguard that causes her to try to leave his yacht with the other party guests. She is detained and taken to his island. As they approach the island a psychic jamming frequency makes Elle’s powers unusable. Stavros then tells her that it will be her home where she will raise his children, how he’s been searching for a psychic woman like her.

I have to warn anyone that can’t read about women being abused that the first 100 pages of this book made me feel a little nauseous and my chest tight with tension. I’m very empathetic when it comes to what I read and I felt despair, fear, and shame while reading Elle’s feelings during her imprisonment. Christine doesn’t go into details of the rape but does describe Elle’s wounds from being beaten in vivid detail. I was reading the book during my lunch break at work and had to stop to go back to work just as the rescue mission to retrieve Elle was starting. I couldn’t stop thinking about what was going to happen. Heading up the mission is Elle’s destined mate, Jackson, and her sisters with their fiancés (of which most have been involved in some sort of law enforcement). They had been searching for her but couldn’t find her due to the dampening field on the island until they combined their powers with Jackson. They’re able to rescue her but Stavros gets away but not before telling Elle she belongs to him, he’ll find her anywhere, and kill anyone she loves.

The book then follows her recovery. She feels she can’t live with her sisters and only feels safe with Jackson. And Stavros is also psychic and continues to try to terrorize Elle. I won’t describe any more of the book because it would ruin the rest but needless to say it wraps up the series very satisfactorily. I really enjoyed the book. It definitely pulls on the emotions of the reader.

And it brings to the attention of readers how serious human trafficking has become and how hard it is to fight to destroy it. I hope that this review interests everyone in this series; it is well worth the read. And I must say that Christine did leave an opening for a possible spin-off series. To say that Christine is an excellent author is an understatement as her turn of the written word had such an effect on me that I was as jumpy as a cat the rest of my work day until I could get home to read about the rescue mission and breathe a sigh of relief.
