If you are a KGI fan give me a Hell Yeah! or a HooRah!

Ok ,ok  I can hear ya but if you haven’t read any of Maya’s KGI series, What are you waiting for????    These books have some serious suspense and action in them as well as hot hunky men willing to go to the wall for the women they love.

Whispers In the Dark is the fourth book in Maya Bank’s KGI series.

I Absolutely Positively LOVE Maya’s KGI series.

The Kelly Brothers: Ethan, Sam, Garret(my fav), Nathan( todays hero), Donovan and Joe and  are a group of men I’d want at my back if I was ever in any kind of trouble, and I know my dh will not be happy but, I hear they are very good in bed too.

As far as heroines go, the Kelly women are all kick ass from Rachel the first one; Sophie who will knock your socks of in the opening scenes.  Sarah(she stole my man) and  Shea who is featured in this story, they all have an inner strength that can be inspiring.

I can honestly say that each book is full of action and suspense, they pack a punch. With Whispers In The Dark I think Maya has raised the bar even higher.

Maya has made me a believer in mind over matter and in physic powers with this tale she has spun. I believed in physic powers to a point before but after reading ‘Whispers’ and “seeing” Shea’s abilities my mind is open to the possibilities of her sister Graces abilities.

I was amazed as events unfolded in this story and my mouth dropped open a time or two, (the panic room and the jump into the helicopter) the jump into the helicopter would be awesome to see in a movie, my god, the guy ran and jumped off a cliff into a hovering chopper while carrying a mostly unconscience woman!!!! balls of steel!!!!!! I also cried, I will tell you to have some kleenex at hand, you’ll need it and some chocolate. But it’s the connection between Nathan and Shea, what they are willing to do and endure for each other that sticks in your heart.

While the books are part of a series they can also be read as stand-alone, but as we know I do prefer to read them in order. Maya’s characters are so well written that the emotions of Nathan during and after his capture and continual torture, seem to be very realistic and his responses to those emotions true to form as I have noticed from a POW member of my family. The connection between Nathan and Shea is perfectly portrayed; they seem truly in tune with each other. Nathan’s interaction with his siblings, especially his twin Joe truly show the inner workings of the Kelly Clan.

We get to know a little more about the mysterious and elusive Resnik in this story that will have you saying…”I never saw that coming!”  When it comes to Resnik let’s just say…”Oh, what a tangled web we weave…..” we find out some shocking stuff about him in this installment and we kinda see him in a little different light at times.

And Rio I have always been intrigued with Rio ever since we went to his house in No Place to Run or Hidden Away and well, I won’t say anything incase you decide to read the series. I can’t wait for the next book as it is Rio’s story. He’s always been a bit of a mystery and I’m wondering why he volunteered for the job of finding Grace.

I enjoy seeing what is going on at the Kelly Compound, how the families are doing, what trouble Rusty has been up to, the construction.

Maya Banks certainly has done a mega-million dollar job mixing suspense, explosive action, heartwrenching emotions and situations all together with some paranormal physic abilities to create one hell of a read.

I also want to applaud the art department or whoever did the cover. I appreciate that Nathan looks younger  on the cover than his brothers on the previous book covers.

So let’s take a look at the official blurbs from Maya’s site shall we?

The Kelly Group International (KGI): A super elite, top-secret, family run business.

Qualifications: High intelligence, rock hard body, military background.

Mission: Hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering. Handling jobs the US government can’t…

She came to him when he needed her the most

She came to him at his lowest point. The voice of an angel, a whisper in the dark. She’s the only thing that gets Nathan Kelly through his captivity, the endless days of torture and the fear that he’ll never return to his family. With her help, he’s able to escape. But he isn’t truly free, because now she’s disappeared and he’s left with an all-consuming emptiness as he struggles to pick up the pieces of his life. Did he imagine his angel? Or is she out there, needing his help as he’d once needed hers?

Now he rushes to save her before it’s too late

Shea has been on the run from people who will stop at nothing to exploit her unique abilities. She never wanted to drag Nathan, who’d already suffered so much, into danger, but she doesn’t have a choice so she reaches out to him for help. Finally face-to-face after having already formed a soul-deep bond in hell, their emotional connection is even more powerful than their telepathic one. Nathan refuses to consider ever letting her go again, but she worries they can never have a life free of the dangers that dog her every step. He’ll protect her with his every breath, but can he convince her that they are meant to face these threats together?

The valley went quiet. Wind whistled eerily through the trees. Leaves rustled. Chills raced down Shea’s arms. She was Nathan’s only barrier to the cold. His only protection from pain that should have had him unconscious on the ground.

In the distance, the bastards crept forward, drawing closer to Nathan’s position. He held a finger up to tell Swanson to hold off.

“Wait,” he mouthed.

Swanson nodded and tightened his grip around the rifle.

They were about four hundred yards away when the world exploded in a series of gunfire. Several of the men who’d been pursuing Nathan and Swanson hit the ground. Others broke and ran, shooting wildly left and right, completely away from where Nathan and Swanson stood.

“What the fuck?” Swanson demanded.

As Nathan stared, mystified, the valley swarmed with soldiers. Holy fucking hell. American goddamn soldiers.

His heart raced and damn near beat out of his chest.

“Oh my God,” Swanson breathed. “They’ve come for us.”

Nathan had never been so happy to see someone in his entire life. It was all he could do not to run out, waving his arms, but he remained in his position and told Swanny to do the same.

It was clear by the number of Tangos hitting the ground that snipers were picking them off on either side. What was left was taking heavy fire from the swarm of soldiers coming at them from all sides.

A few Tangos got close enough for Nathan and Swanson to squeeze off shots. In a matter of minutes, what few remained turned tail and hauled ass back the way they’d come.

Swanson let out a whoop and hoisted his rifle into the air.

Jubilation filled Nathan as well. We did it, Shea!

Nathan waited for the reassuring response from Shea but she was silent. Dread gripped him until finally he felt her stir and warmth traveled through his body again.

I knew you’d do it.

Her confidence imbued him with the strength to walk out from behind the tree. He staggered from cover just as Swanson started out as well. The two men helped each other as they went to meet the approaching soldiers.

As they drew closer, Nathan’s pulse ratcheted up and tears blurred his vision. Donovan? Sam? Ethan? Garrett? Holy shit. It was KGI, not the army.

“It’s my brothers,” Nathan croaked.

“I don’t give a fuck if they’re your sisters,” Swanson said as he hoisted Nathan’s sagging body. “I’ll kiss them just the same.”

Adrenaline left him. Even Shea’s unwavering support couldn’t hold him up any longer. Nathan sagged, going down to his knees.

It was like a breaking dam. Pain flooded him. Fire burned through his limbs, his muscles, even his veins.          He realized that Shea’s strength was gone. She could no longer shield him. She’d shielded him far too long already.

He glanced up to see horror written on his brothers’ faces as they ran toward him. Then he looked down, realizing what they saw. He was gaunt, completely naked, and blood ran in rivulets down his body from all the cuts. It streamed down his leg where he’d taken a bullet.

He looked like he’d been to hell and back. He could feel the fires of hell licking up his body until he was consumed in agony.

He pitched forward, bracing his palms against the cold earth as his brothers surrounded him.

You’re safe now, Nathan.

Shea’s weak voice reached him just as he sensed her withdrawal. Only it felt final this time. Not like the others when she’d always promised to come back.

Please, please don’t tell anyone about me. Please keep my secret safe. My safety depends on it.

And then she was gone, leaving a giant, yawning hole in the pit of his soul. His fingers curled into the dirt. “No! Don’t leave! Goddamn it, don’t leave!”

“Nathan, my God. It’s me, Donovan. You’re okay now, man. We’re here. We’re not going to leave you. We’re going to take you home.”

As his brothers tried to roll him over, Nathan went ballistic. Here, when he was surrounded by his brothers, he’d never felt so alone in his life.

“Don’t go! Oh God, don’t go. Please don’t leave me,” he whispered brokenly.

Garrett palmed Nathan’s face with both hands and lowered his face until they were mere inches apart. “Nathan, we’re here. We’re taking you home. Everything’s okay now. We’re going to get you out of here.”

“Swanny. Take care of Swanny,” he managed to gasp out.

“I’ve got him,” Ethan said. “Don’t worry. We’ve got him.”

Tears streamed down Nathan’s cheeks as he stared up at the sky, so brilliantly blue. It ought to be red for all the bloodshed and yet it was pristine and soft.

“Don’t go. Don’t leave me, Shea.”

The words broke painfully from his raw throat. He hadn’t realized he’d been screaming just a moment ago. He closed his eyes as pain engulfed him.

“Who the fuck is Shea?” Sam demanded.

“Mine,” Nathan murmured. “Mine.”

Donovan knelt to wrap Nathan’s leg to stop the bleeding. He didn’t even flinch. There was simply too much pain, too much loss.

Shea. Don’t go.

He caught a vague image of her curled into a tight ball, suffering alone. It was more than he could bear. And then his mind went blank. No Shea. It was as if she’d never existed.

“Get that fucking helo here!” Garrett yelled.

“Down! Down!” Sam hollered.

None of what they said made sense but suddenly Nathan found himself covered. Donovan pressed him to the ground.

“They’re American!” Ethan hollered. “Hold your fire! Hold your fire!”

Donovan pushed himself off Nathan and then stared down at his brother. “Looks like Uncle Sam decided to come along after all.”

Nathan turned his head, squinting into the sun. The valley was swarming with soldiers. It was too much to take in. He’d been on the verge of giving up all hope of ever returning home.

Thanks to a faceless woman with the voice of an angel and the strength of a warrior, he’d survived.
