Hello Everyone,
Happy Humpday! I am so happy to introduce you to a recently found new to me author Laura Kaye! I am currently waiting for two of her recent books West of Want and North of Need to arrive in my PO Box and I have also pre-ordered South of Surrender.
Doesn’t Laura have a beautiful smile and lovely blue eyes, she just looks so happy!
So to start out our Wonderful Wednesday let’s have some fun!
Questions just for fun:
SW: Which makes you go weak in the knees Southern Drawl or Scottish Burr?
LK: Oh, man, it would have to be the Scottish. There’s just something about a foreign accent that crawls right up under my skin! (in the best possible way… *winks*)
SW: Me too, Scottish is my #1 but a sweet southern drawl comes in second, especially if the manners come with it.
****************************************************************************************
SW: Guard Dog, Lap Dog or Independent Cat?
LK: Guard dog. Gimme a dog any day! (I have a German Shepherd / Collie mix named Jack)
SW: I have two cats, no dog not since I lost my two Saint Bernards but I want to get another big dog.
*****************************************************************************************
SW: Fur(wolfies) or Fangs(Vamps)?
LK: OMG FANGS! My first love as a reader and a writer has been vampires, so it’s not even a question for me!
***********************************************************************************
SW: Your idea of camping: 5 Star Hotel or Canvas Tent?
LK: Hotel please! Wouldn’t even have to be five stars! I just love any reason to stay in a hotel! Plus every time I’ve ever slept in a tent, I’ve woken up to daddy longleggers all over the flaps to the tent so that you have to crawl right under them to get out. *shudders*
SW: I’m with your sista, I especially like hotels with breakfast too, no spiders welcome here.
********************************************************************************
SW: Cowboy or City boy?
LK: Hmm. This is a tough one! I’d probably go with the city boy.
SW: Oh, I was expecting cowboy, can you tell why you prefer a city boy?
LK: Well, now, let’s just start by saying I have nothing against a cowboy! *winks* But I’ve lived in small towns or cities most of my life, so I guess I just have a thing for a guy who knows how to show a girl a good time in the big city!
******************************************************************************
SW: Offspring or Home aloner?
LK: Well, since I have two offspring, I guess I’ll go with the former. *grins* My daughters are eight and almost six.
SW: I am a offspringer too….lots of offspring.
**********************************************************************************
SW: Umbrella Cocktails or Longneck?
LK: Probably umbrella cocktails, but honestly I have so little tolerance for alcohol I rarely drink. When I do it’s something fruity (which is dangerous because, made right, you don’t taste much of the alcohol!) or a glass of wine.
SW: I don’t drink at all but umbrella drinks are so cute looking.
********************************************************************************
SW: Cake or Ice Cream?
LK: Can’t I have both??? Particularly chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream???
SW: Yeah I was hoping someone would feel the same as I do, love devils food with vanilla ice cream.
***********************************************************************
SW: Camel Ride or Elephant Ride?
LK: Elephant, I always thought they were such gentle giants. I would love to ride on one, and then hug him!
***********************************************************************
SW: Breakfast at Denny’s or IHOP?
LK: When we go out for breakfast, we’re often a Denny’s family…
*********************************************************************
SW: Quiet Night In or Wild Night Out?
LK: You know, I really want to say the latter, but I’m really mostly a quiet night in kinda girl. LOL
SW: Me too.
****************************************************************************
Thanks so much to Z for hosting me here today! This is a very exciting time for me as I’m in the middle of celebrating the release of not one but two new books!
Her Forbidden Hero is a contemporary romance about close friends turned lovers—with a twist: Alyssa Scott is the little sister of hero Marco Vieri’s best friend and Army Special Forces teammate, and he knows her brother isn’t going to be happy about them being together, especially given the scars Marco bears from a mission-gone-bad.
On June 1, Seduced by the Vampire King releases. This is the second in my Vampire Warrior Kings series, and it’s about finding what you need, even if it is the last thing you expected or wanted. Nikolai Vasilyev is a grieving vampire king who refuses to mate, and Katherine Bordessa is a human woman who fled her family to escape a supernatural destiny. When they meet on the mid-night streets of Moscow,Russia, things will never be the same for either of them.
So what do these two stories have in common? Tortured, tormented heroes who have convinced themselves either they don’t deserve happiness or they’re too screwed up to ever again find it. I love reading tortured hero stories, and here are five reasons why:
5. Tortured heroes are all hard angles and rough edges and strength on the outside, but they’re aching with pain on the inside and refusing to acknowledge that agony even exists. So compelling!
4. Tortured heroes are fundamentally strong, because they do their job—whether it’s fighting or leading or protecting—despite the despair that sometimes threatens to swamp. They are inherently competent and selfless, which makes them so admirable.
3. As a reader, tortured heroes make me ache to see them be comforted, and I love being drawn in like that by characters.
2. Their inner pain is tortured heroes’ greatest weakness, and just the right heroine can find her way past his walls and begin to dress his wounds. I love that moment when the hero realizes just how dangerous the heroine is to him, because she makes him want and need things he’d convinced himself he could do without.
1. The redemption of tortured heroes is so dang satisfying to read about and to write about. That moment when all the walls fall, when all the masks drop, when he exposes himself and let’s the pain rise to the surface, raw and bleeding. And then that big, strong, fierce man is carried by the strength and love and solace of his heroine, who loves him despite all the way he’s screwed up and helps him find peace. Gah!
So, I thought I’d give you a taste of both of my tortured heroes in action:
First, meet Marco Vieri from Her Forbidden Hero:
You always want what you can’t have…
She’s always been off-limits…
Former Army Special Forces Sgt. Marco Vieri has never thought of Alyssa Scott as more than his best friend’s little sister, but her return home changes that…and challenges him to keep his war-borne demons at bay. Marco’s not the same person he was back when he protected Alyssa from her abusive father, and he’s not about to let her see the mess he’s become.
…but now she’s all grown up.
When Alyssa takes a job at the bar where Marco works, her carefree smiles wreak havoc on his resolve to bury his feelings. How can he protect her when he can’t stop thinking about her in his bed? But Alyssa’s not looking for protection–not anymore. Now that she’s back in his life, she’s determined to heal her forbidden hero, one touch at a time…
Her Forbidden Hero Excerpt:
Warm arms came around his stomach as Alyssa embraced him from behind. Her head settled between his shoulder blades and, without telling his hand to move, he found himself clutching her hands to his chest.
Marco gave in to the comfort of her touch and absorbed everything he could from her. The magic of her music still swirled in the air, and in his mind’s eye, he saw himself turning in her arms, bending down, clutching her face in his hands, and drawing their mouths together. He’d walk her backward through the house as their hands tugged at shirts and bared skin. They’d end up on the bed and she’d be all splayed out, warm and his for the taking.
Alyssa nuzzled into his back and pressed a kiss against his shoulder.
He sucked in a breath, his erection punching against the fly of his jeans again. But it wouldn’t just be sex. Not with her. The ache in his chest and the constriction in his throat, that was about the part of him that wanted to comfort her and be comforted in return, that wanted companionship and a place to belong. It would be about lo—
He shook his head, clamping down on the tail end of that thought. Without question, Alyssa would give him everything he wanted and more, but what he wanted was just a bunch of fantasy bullshit for someone like him.
It killed him to do so, but he twisted free of her arms and forced himself to face her. Frustration and regret weighed on his shoulders like an anvil. “This”—he waved his finger back and forth between them and swallowed down a river of sadness—“this right here. This can’t happen.”
Alyssa’s expression morphed from surprise into hurt, and the tinge of pink on her cheeks revealed a healthy dose of embarrassment mixed in.
Wasn’t that the sour cherry on his shit sundae? Hurting her was the last thing he wanted to do, but better to hurt her a little now than a lot later.
Second, meet Nikolai Vasilyev from Seduced by the Vampire King:
Book 2: Vampire Warrior Kings Series
American exchange student Kate Bordessa has fled to Russia to escape her family’s hopes that she’ll become one of the Proffered, human women who feed and mate with elite vampire warriors. But when she stumbles upon a wounded vampire in the streets of Moscow, she’s instinctively driven to protect him–and feels an undeniable spark of desire.
Grieving over the deaths of his brothers, Vampire Warrior King Nikolai Vasilyev has thrown himself into battling his enemies, focused only on vengeance. Until the attack that brought him to Kate. Their sexual attraction explodes into a night of uncontrolled passion–a night that marks them as mates. Is their connection strong enough to convince them to embrace a destiny neither of them was expecting?
Seduced by the Vampire King excerpt:
He couldn’t let himself be seduced by an impossible idea. He sprung to his feet and made for the door, still open from his earlier rushed entry. “I have to go.”
“Why?” She followed after him, the alluring beat of her heart and intoxicating femininity revealing her place within the room.
He couldn’t stop, couldn’t reply, couldn’t look at her. If he did, there’d be no going back.
He grasped the edge of the door.
Small hands fisted in the back of his shirt. “Wait. Why are you leaving? I mean, did I—”
He halted, heart slamming against his sternum, fangs stretched out and aching. “Release me,” he rasped.
She heaved a shaky breath he felt against his arm. “I…can’t.”
“Release. Me,” he said louder. Competing emotions warred within him until he thought he might split apart.
“Nikolai—”
It was his name rolling off her tongue that did it.
He whirled and buried his hands in her hair. He pulled her to him, causing them both to stumble, and he backed her into the ancient bars of the door. It clicked shut, sealing them in and cutting off the last of his restraint.
Tilting her head back, Nikolai devoured her mouth. His lips sucked, his tongue explored, his fangs rubbed against her moist flesh. Oh, God, she was so sweet and warm and wet. He stepped into her, forcing their bodies together from chest to thighs. And, dammit, she was soft everywhere he was hard.
Her hands curled around his neck and climbed into his hair, fingers tangling and tugging. She pulled him in tighter and surrendered to the kiss. She met him stroke for stroke, their tongues curling and twining together.
And Nikolai no longer knew who was surrendering to whom.

It’s good to see you again, Laura! You’ve been very busy since we talked last. Tickled for you. I can’t add anything you haven’t thought of regarding a tortured hero. Maybe when I have some caffeine flowing in me my brain will function better…:)
Good to see you & see you doing so well!

Good morning Miss Ivy! I have been busy getting Satin Hands washed off the baby….I know It was up on a shelf yesterday…wondering who got it down and gave it to the baby. Thank goodness she only rubbed it on her belly and not her face. I’m about to go get some granola and nanas for breakfast to start my day.

Laura I loved your excerpt for Seduced by the Vampire King!
You write tortured heros so well, and I can’t get enough. The torn up, scarred alpha heros just need the perfect woman to help heal their soul. Usually a messy journey but we wouldn’t love it so much if it wasn’t.
Congrats on your two new releases!!

Hi Carole – Z’s right, I do have some books in print. However, you don’t have to have a kindle to read ebooks. Most books are available in pdf format, which can be read on a computer. AND you can download a kindle app to your PC or Mac for free, so you can have a free kindle reading program on your computer to read kindle books. Just a thought! 🙂

I love tortured heroes. I love watching them overcome their past. As strong as they are and as much as they try to hide the pain within they have fear. When they finally find their mate all that comes to the surface and is healed or dealt with in one way or another. I just love it all unfolding before my eyes.
Thank you so much. I loved the q & a. Great answers.

Wow–GREAT intro and post, Z and Laura!
Tortured heroes are fabulous mainly because of that incredible inner turmoil and how they struggle with themselves over what’s right and not. And as you said, their redemption is so completely satisfying!! I love that most! Because everyone should get a second chance.

Tortured heroes are enthralling to write and read about; there’s such natural conflict. However, in real life, a tortured hero is an oxymoron.

I love tortured heroes because they generally feel that they will never have someone to love them or that they are beyond redemption. It takes a strong heroine to finally convince them that they do deserve and are loved.
I am really looking forward to the new Vampire Warrior Kings release. I loved the first one a lot!!!

Oh my! How can you not love a tortured hero? A lot of times they build a wall up around themselves with funny dialogue and sometimes they can be on the gruff side and you find yourself just aching to burst through to the pain and start the healing. I like to read heros like this because half the fun of the book is following them as they heal and then once they do the love they have for that heroine is beyond strong.
I must say that Seduced By The Vampire King has gotten my attention! I find myself really wanting to get to know Nikolai. Something tells me he will find his own place in my heart where all the other characters in past stories dwell.

Mmmm tortured hero’s, I love it when you start to chip at their walls and you get to the slightly vulnerable inside. They’re usually strong and protective and lets face it we all want a man that can make us fell feminine and safe and protected at times but can also drive us mad with passion… Tortured hero’s have usually got more sides to their personalities and that to me is a bonus! 🙂

What I love most about tortured heroes is that they feel they don’t deserve any kind of happiness or love. They feel what they did deserves punishment and they are constantly punishing themselves. When a woman breaks through that wall, they will do anything for them. They will protection them no matter what and will love them passionately. They will sacrifice their life for the ones they love.

Great excerpts. I like when a tortured hero finds his heroine and becomes devoted to her.

For me it’s knowing that for them to be so tortured and dark they have the ability to love deeply. Whether it’s love for their family, best friends, or the woman who will be the love of their life they care very deeply. It that depth of feeling that grabs me every time.

I love the fight the tortured hero puts up. And I love how when they give up the fight they learn they are worthy of being loved by the one they want! I gotta thang for torture heroes!!!!

I love the journey to redemption especially when the heroine is their savior. I love when they finally realize that they can be loved by someone no matter what their past is. There is always that one lucky person 😉
Love them!!
