So, hi, I’m Ava Miles, the contemporary romance writer of The Dare Valley series, which kicked off this summer with the first book, NORA ROBERTS LAND. Thanks to Miss Ivy for hosting me today, so I can talk about my new release.
As a writer, sometimes a secondary character shows up for us and has to have his own story. In my recent release, THE GRAND OPENING, poker champion Rhett Butler Blaylock, arrives in Dare Valley, Colorado with a one-track mind: to get the woman he loves, who dumped him a year ago, to finally see that he’s husband and stepdad material and marry him.
Abbie Maven, the woman he loves, has relocated with her brother and teenage son to help launch his new boutique poker hotel. Abbie became pregnant in high school under tragic circumstances, and so has crafted a conservative and respectable life for herself and her son.
Until she fell into a steamy affair with her brother’s best friend, Rhett Butler Blaylock, a man with zero settle-down characteristics. Rhett is known for his flamboyant off-the-table act, being accompanied by two sequin-clad poker babes designed to break less skilled players’ concentration. Of course, few know that these “babes” are actually MBAs from Harvard and work as his scouts. Still, Rhett is a ramble-rousing good ol’ boy, and is pretty happy with that lifestyle until he falls for Abbie.
Rhett’s mama named him after Rhett Butler because she’s a super fan of Gone with the Wind, and let’s face it, Rhett (my character) does a pretty good job living up to that literary figure’s total disregard for society’s conventions. I mean, he lives hard and plays hard.
But Abbie changes that, so he’s showing up in Dare Valley, toning down the amount of leather pants he wears. Okay, and snakeskin. Abbie hates that. And he’s forsakes his gallon-size cowboy hats because she’s not really into that either.
Rhett spends all of THE GRAND OPENING trying to convince her that he’s changed, and because their story was so compelling, I just knew they had to get together in their own story. In a week or so, I’ll be releasing their Christmas novella called THE HOLIDAY SERENADE. Rhett has recruited his friend, country singer Rye Crenshaw to help him serenade Abbie. And the fun just doesn’t quit. There’s a hilarious ice-skating scene where Rhett takes Abbie to the town square on a date, but the romance falls flat because…well, he does. He cannot stay upright on skates. So much for that bright idea. Then he throws a Winter Wonderland party he’s sure Abbie would approve of being so Martha-Stewart-crazed, but again, he’s wrong.
So, if you like Rhett Butler, check out my own inspiration in THE GRAND OPENING to start. Rhett and Abbie are lots of fun.
So let me ask you? What is it about Rhett Butler anyway? Please tell me I’m not the only one here.
Ava Miles burst onto the contemporary romance scene after receiving Nora Roberts’ blessing for her use of Ms. Roberts’ name in her debut novel, NORA ROBERTS LAND, which kicked off The Dare Valley Series and brought praise from reviewers and readers alike. Much to Ava’s delight, BlogCritics says “It [NORA ROBERTS LAND] captures the best of…a Nora Roberts novel,” while USA Today’s Happily Ever After blog praises the series noting its “wonderful, idyllic setting… [and] great characters.” Ava continued The Dare Valley Series in FRENCH ROAST, which Tome Tender says “raised the entertainment bar again.” Now, Ava releases the third book in the series, THE GRAND OPENING, with her recognized wit and charm, creating happy endings with humor and heart. A descendant of generations of journalists, Ava—a writer since childhood—now lives in her own porch-swinging-friendly community with an old-fashioned Main Street lined with small businesses. Much like Dare Valley.
