If You’re Writing a Book with Travel in It, then Travel

The majority of Complicated Creatures was written on the road. It began while I was driving down the West Coast on the Pacific Coast Highway just after I quit my job. As an aside, everyone should do that drive in their life at least once, and preferably in a fast car. Anyway, over the year it took to write Complicated Creatures, the magic happened across 7 countries, 8 states and 4 oceans and it ended in the breathtaking salt flats of Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni.

There’s a great deal of discontent for the wanderer who cannot wander. When I was doing the corporate gambit for a living, I used short trips and stolen getaways to cajole myself into brief intervals of relief when what I was really missing was what traveling had always really represented: Freedom. Did I crave the open road? Certainly. But I craved the meaning behind it more. And what I needed, one week trips and extended weekends couldn’t give me.

The thing is, your wants and desires will always evolve, shift, and alter with time, experience, and situations. But Personal Truths are the steadying point of your particular compass. You’ll get lost without the individual and unique North Stars that keep you focused whether you’re on the right path, or like I was a year ago… adrift.

I knew the following to be true: I needed my freedom–the ability to see the world on my terms, to express myself how I wanted, and when I wanted. I was bursting with untold stories, hidden narratives, and unrealized characters. And the longer I didn’t live my Personal Truths, the more that discontent and suffering would mount.

Did I sell everything and become an ascetic? Hell, no. I’m an Alexander McQueen-wearing diva with the red lipstick to match. But I did get rid of all the crap that was weighing me down – the job, the lavish (and expensive) loft, the people who told me I was nuts to do it, and the extra stuff I had laying around that wasn’t doing anything but taking up space, and I hit the road with my laptop and a new plan. The “This Is Your Life” plan.

Less than a year later, my first book is published, with another mid-stream.

A year ago, if I had been writing a book about my life, it would have been titled, “Get Me the F*ck Outta Here!

Now, it would be, “Not All Who Wander are Lost

Go wander!

Alexi LAWLESS.

Corporate Runaway. Novelist. Wanderer. Bourbon Drinker.

Alexi LAWLESS has been a closeted writer for thirty-odd years—from way back when she was banging out stories on a Commodore 64 to her years writing the corporate strategies for some of the largest companies in the world. But it was two years ago, laid up after foot surgery, that she started to seriously consider whether it was time to come out as the novelist she’d always wanted to be.

Armed with a laptop and an around-the-world ticket, she quit the corporate scene and set out to see if her passion for writing was more than a pipe-dream. Less than a year later, Alexi’s debuting her first published novel, Complicated Creatures: Part One, with the second book due out this summer. And while you may catch her sipping a drink in Miami Beach, you’re more likely to find her indulging her nomadic tendencies somewhere in Latin America or Southeast Asia.
